Encaustic Workshop Classes

Encaustics is a very old art form that dates back to 100 B.C. It was brought over to Egypt from Greece, to adorn the mummies with life-like portraits on thin veneer boards. It was used because the wax is long lasting and water repellent. It is surprising that today many of the same materials are still used: beeswax, pigments, resin, brushes. The big difference is we have electricity so we can melt the waxes and fuse the layers with more ease. Encaustic means "to burn in". Each layer of melted wax is melted to the layer before it. You will work with a hot palette of colored wax and tools like a heat gun, propane torch and irons.

Level 1 Introduction:

This is a two day course on the basics of encaustics. You will take home finished paintings of your own making and a good foundation in encaustics. Your days will cover – History of encaustics, safety, use of tools, preparing surfaces, fusing, carbon transfers, ensizing, embossing and embedding objects. You will have demos and a lot of time to complete a few pieces of your own.

All courses are 2 days from 10:00 - 4:30 and will be held outside, under the patio by my studio in Abbotsford. Lunch is included, coffee and tea. It's like a mini retreat. Working in wax is fun but not suitable for children. You must be over 18 years old to attend.

Mixed Media

This is an intensive course that will give you a good foundation and the skills to start your exploration of this wonderful art form. You will learn the use of mediums and how to build an interesting surface with texture. You will work with transfers, rust and patina and so much more. You can bring your own photo copy for transfers if you have a motif in mind. Note, if it has script on it, reverse it before printing. Copies from Staples are best. Notes are included. The workshop runs over 2 days in my home studio in Abbotsford with a view of Mount Baker from the studio, lunch, coffee and tea are included. Some painting experience is an asset. But not required.
